چکیده
Nowadays, in-fiber acousto-optic devices are increasingly used as frequency shifters, multiplexers, modulators, and tunable filters. They can be easily spliced into optical fiber systems, and the consequent low insertion loss, make them an attractive alternative to bulk optics devices. Our group, established at the Institute of Materials Science, Department of Applied Physics, of the Valencia University (ICMUV, Valencia, Spain), has been involved in this field for the last ten years, and our fabrication facilities allow us the development of new in-fiber acousto-optic devices for novel applications in different fields such as sensors, microwave photonics, lasers, and optical communications. Our aim here is to present the great potential shown by in-fiber acousto-optic devices for different photonic applications. Although this chapter is focused in our latest developments, the reader will also find discussed the work done by other research groups in the field. This chapter is divided in two main sections: Section 2 is focused on novel applications of acousto-optic fiber devices based on flexural acoustic waves, and Section 3 is focused on applications of the acoustooptic devices based on the interaction of longitudinal acoustic waves with fiber Bragg gratings (FBG). Finally, our conclusions are shown in Section 4.

Acousto-Optic Tunable Filters Spectrally Modulate Light
The development of opt electronic technology in the past two decades has intensified research on devices that control and manipulate optical radiation. Acousto-optic devices are based on acousto-optic effects in which the optical medium is altered by the presence of ultrasound. Examples of acousto-optic devices include optical modulators, deflectors, scanners, Q-switches, isolators, and frequen...
متن کاملDifferent Plastic Materials Based Acousto-optic Modulators (AOMs) Design Considerations for Fast Switching Applications
An acousto-optic modulator (AOM) allows to diffract a laser beam going through a crystal from the incidence angle (order 0) to another angle (order 1). The diffracted beam intensity depends on the radio frequency (RF) power applied to the device while the output angle depends on the material but is also proportional to the laser wavelength and to the RF drive frequency. When only intensity modu...
متن کاملPolarization Dependence Suppression of Optical Fiber Grating Sensor in a π-Shifted Sagnac Loop Interferometer
In the sensing applications of optical fiber grating, it is necessary to reduce the transmission-type polarization dependence to isolate the sensing parameter. It is experimentally shown that the polarization-dependent spectrum of acousto-optic long-period fiber grating sensors can be suppressed in the transmission port of a π-shifted Sagnac loop interferometer. General expressions for the tran...
متن کاملPolarization-coupling all-fiber acousto-optic tunable filter insensitive to fiber bend and physical contact.
We show that an all-fiber acousto-optic tunable filter based on polarization mode coupling using torsional acoustic wave is immune to the fiber bend and physical contact in the acousto-optic interaction region. We also propose and demonstrate a novel strain-free and size-reduced tunable filter with a 4-m-long fiber acousto-optic interaction region looped into a 5- cm-diameter coil.
متن کاملTwist effect on spectral properties of two-mode fiber acousto-optic filters.
The splitting and the shift of resonance peaks in the output spectrum of two-mode fiber acousto-optic devices caused by twist perturbation are described. An elliptical-core two-mode fiber and a two-mode photonic-crystal fiber are used for the analysis. The splitting of the resonance peaks are found to be almost linearly proportional to the twist angle of the fiber with the slopes of about 0.58 ...
